Hubble reveals unavoidable collision between our galaxy and Andromeda
The Hubble team over at NASA has confirmed what it's suspected for a while: that our galaxy is destined for a direct collision / love fest with Andromeda, culminating in the birth of "Milkomeda." But don't go lobbying Virgin Galactic for ring-side tickets just yet because the fireworks won't go off for another four billion years -- and last another two billion after that. Scientists also predict that the earth won't be threatened thanks to the sheer amount of empty space between stars, but we could lose the sun as its flung out to some other part of the new system. You hear that? We could lose the freakin' sun!!

Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett both broke their hands in the first round of their Strikeforce bout
Daniel Cormier and Josh Barnett fought most of their five-round bout with broken hands at Strikeforce on Saturday night. Cormier broke his right hand, the same one he broke in knocking out Antonio Silva in September. Barnett broke his left hand and headed straight to the hospital after losing the decision in the final of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix.
Both men are planning to see surgeons after their grueling bout. Cormier wants to make sure this injury isn't recurring.
"I think this time I'm going to take a different approach," Cormier said. "I think I'm going to have surgery on it and get it fixed, because I don't want it to be recurring and then end up costing me later and later on down the line."
Barnett's manager said the fighter will see an orthopedist to find out how serious the injury is.
Five-round fights are difficult without any injuries. Cormier and Barnett were forced to use different weapons throughout their bout to find a way to the judges' decision.
LG's Android 4.0 upgrades for Optimus LTE, LTE Tag, Vu start in June
LG has been leaving its smartphone owners on pins and needles for their promised Android 4.0 upgrades. It's now starting to take action: if we go by poorly machine-translated Korean, the Optimus LTE, Optimus LTE Tag and Optimus Vu will all get Google's latest starting June 4th. Everyone gets the new UI 3.0 layer, but those who've leapt on the Optimus Vu's phablet frame will get "additional features" that we understand will take advantage of the extra-wide dimensions for side-by-side note-taking. LG's remarks still leave some gaps in the Ice Cream Sandwich story, such as when Nitro HD owners get the new software. Even so, we're glad to see that owners of LG's crème de la crème in at least some corners of the Earth can enjoy Chrome and other Android 4.0 perks in the very near future.

Editorial: Despite shaky 48 fps Hobbit preview, high frame rates will take off
Well actually, the Hobbit preview wasn't shaky, it was smooth -- maybe too smooth -- and that's the point. "It does take you a while to get used to," Peter Jackson has admitted, referring to the surprisingly fluid motion of his 48 fps movie footage. But is he right to think audiences will even give it a chance? The launch of high frame-rate (HFR) cinema is surrounded by publicity in the run-up to the Hobbit's debut on December 12th, but it equally has a lot going against it. For starters, the film's 48 fps preview wasn't exactly received warmly. On top of that, the video-style apperance of HFR has a long history of being disliked by movie-goers -- past attempts since the 1970s have all flamed out.
85 years after the first 24 fps movies, the same number of frames are still going stubbornly through the gate (digital or otherwise) each second, so that must be what "filmic" is, right? Or will we look back on 24fps as the bad old days? Read on to see if these new/old-fangled frame speeds might survive, and though a 48 fps Hobbit trailer isn't available, we've provided a couple of clips to help you judge what two-dimensional HFR looks like.

Ronda Rousey shares why you should always call when you say you will
Strikeforce bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has made quite a name for herself. She won the belt from Miesha Tate in March, and since then has appeared on "The Ultimate Fighter," in magazines and at UFC and Strikeforce shows. As she became famous, someone from her past suddenly reappeared. On Instagram, Rousey shared how an old beau contacted her out of the blue and how she responded.
Let this be a lesson to men everywhere. Always give the courtesy call, because you never know when a woman will become a famous mixed martial artist who is capable of embarrassing you and breaking your arm.

Remember the Cray XK6 at the University of Illinois that drives the National Science Foundation's Blue Waters project? Well, it looks like it's getting a little memory upgrade, sorta. We're not talking a slick new SSD here, or even a sweet NAS, all that computational power requires nothing less than... tape. Okay, so it's actually a full storage infrastructure, and some of it -- 25 petabytes no less -- will be disk-based. The rest -- a not insignificant 380 petabytes -- will be the good old magnetic stuff. The idea is that the disk part will be used for instant access, with the tape section serving as "nearline" storage -- something between an archive and online solution. Spectra Logic is providing the tape, and says it'll take a couple of years to implement the whole lot. Once complete, the system will support the supercomputer's lofty tasks, such as understanding how the cosmos evolved after the Big Bang and, y'know designing new materials at the atomic level. And we thought we were excited about out next desktop.

Nate Diaz shines in UFC on Fox 3 main event; Johny Hendricks, Alan Belcher and Lavar Johnson with big wins
Nate Diaz became the first fighter to stop Jim Miller at UFC on Fox 3 in New Jersey Saturday with a guillotine choke in the second round of the main event.
After a tight first round, Diaz started to taunt Miller in the second round. When Miller tried for the takedown, Diaz rolled into a one-arm guillotine choke so tight that Miller's tongue was stuck out. He was forced to tap at 4:09 in the second.
After the bout, Diaz said he had a hard time with the bout because he respected Miller.
"I'm happy to come out to New Jersey and come out and perform. It was hard to be motivated to train because he's a good guy."
With the win, Diaz is expected to face Anthony Pettis in a title-eliminator bout.
Hendricks takes split-decision
Surprisingly, the two Division I national champions stuck to striking for most of the first round. Josh Koscheck got the better of exchanges and avoided Johny Hendricks' takedowns. Hendricks did a better job in the second, using lefts to beat up Koscheck's face and knees to weaken his legs.
Koscheck got the first takedown of the fight in the round, and used top position to control the fight until the end but it was Hendricks who came out with a 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 split-decision win.
For Hendricks, the win is his fourth in a row and the key to a welterweight title shot. UFC president Dana White hinted earlier this week that with a win, Hendricks could be next in line, after interim champ Carlos Condit challenges George St-Pierre.
Most fighters cannot escape the Rousimar Palhares leg lock, but Alan Belcher did and that was the key to his win. Belcher attempted a leg lock of his own before Palhares put on the kneebar that has broken many a fighter before him. When he escaped, he put down ground and pound that stopped Palhares at 4:18 in the first round.
Pat Barry tried to use a ground game against Johnson early on, but he couldn't keep Lavar Johnson down. With less than a minute to go in the first round, Johnson wobbled Barry with a head kick, then hemmed him in against the fence, landing a barrage of punches. Barry didn't move and just absorbed Johnson's strikes until he fell to the ground with 21 seconds left in the first round.
