Video: PopMech offers a video history of the automotive barrel roll

Astro Spiral Jump

Rob Dyrdek's "kick flip" stunt in a Chevrolet Sonic effectively sealed his place in the hallowed halls of stunt driver lore. As it turns out, actually pulling off a 360-degree barrel roll in a vehicle is one of the most challenging stunts one can perform. Driving on two wheels? Cakewalk. Knocking down a series of buses stacked on their ends? As easy as sucking pea soup through a crazy straw. The barrel roll requires stacks of mathematical calculations to account for everything from the vehicle's weight to its speed and the exact rotation angle of each ramp.

But Dyrdek wasn't the first guy to successfully execute such a bit of insanity. He's one of a select few stunt drivers to do the deed, and Popular Mechanics has taken a look at those who have tackled the automotive barrel roll in the past. Dyrdek's stunt was actually an almost exact replica of the Astro Spiral Jump as performed in 1972 at the Houston Astrodome. That exercise used a significantly classier AMC Javelin, however. Head over to Popular Mechanics to check out the video series and click past the jump for a clip on the Astro Spiral Jump.

Castillo?s wrestling too much for Njokuani at UFC 141

Castillo?s wrestling too much for Njokuani at UFC 141

LAS VEGAS - Anthony Njokuani had to avoid the takedown and Danny Castillo needed to nullify his opponent's striking. Wrestling usually thwarts good standup and it did tonight at UFC 141.

The stronger grappler Castillo took the fight to the ground enough and controlled things on his way to a split decision win, 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28, over Njokuani in the first fight UFC 141 on the Spike broadcast.

Castillo got a little irked with UFC analyst Joe Rogan, who called the decision controversial.

"It was that close to you?" asked Castillo. "I thought it was close but not controversial."

Castillo (13-4, 3-1 UFC) got further annoyed when the crowd began to boo. He was quick to point out that he took three fights on short notice this year. The fans in attendance were clueless, they were just booing to boo.

Castillo took this fight on Decmeber 7 when Ramsey Nijem had to back out of the fight. He wasn't at 100 percent with his stamina, but it was good enough to control the pace of the fight.

AT&T-branded Nokia Ace possibly leaked in holiday card

Nokia Ace
The grain of salt we're taking this with is roughly boulder-sized but, we have an image of what may very well be the AT&T Nokia Ace -- the rumored LTE-sporting Windows Phone from the Finnish phone maker. It seems that someone sent out a holiday greeting featuring a phone that looks a heck of a lot like the Lumia 800, except it prominently features a Ma-Bell logo, a 4G icon and what appears to be a front facing camera. Of course, what has also been referred to as the Lumia 900 could just as easily be a chop job -- and not a particularly difficult one to pull off at that. Hit up the source link for a couple of more pics of what could be Nokia's first high-end Mango (or, perhaps Tango) offering here in the US.

Lesnar vs. Overeem still on! NSAC grills ?The Reem? over tardy drug test, but grants a conditional license

At the start of today's Nevada State Athletic Commission, it looked like another Las Vegas UFC main event might be headed towards the scrap heap. But after an hour of investigating and collecting info on Alistair Overeem, the commission granted him a conditional license to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 141 later this month.

The issue at hand was a missed random drug test requested by the NSAC on Nov. 17. Overeem's management was called in the morning about the test, the fighter then jumped on a flight from the U.S. to the Netherlands, and no response was given to the request for four days. Overeem explained that the time lapse was simply due to a communications breakdown.

Things got more complicated on Nov. 23 when Overeem went to his personal doctor in Amsterdam and the wrong type of test was administered. The commission asked for a urine test and received blood test results instead. Overeem submitted to the urine test on Dec. 7, but that again was done by his doctor.

After collecting the necessary info during the hearing and a short discussion, the commission decided to grant Overeem a conditional license.

He'll have to re-test in the next few days at a European location designated by the NSAC. He'll also have to submit another urine sample once he returns to the U.S. Following the fight, Overeem will be subjected to two more random tests in the U.S.

Overeem returned home on Nov. 17 because his mother experienced a health scare in her fight against cancer. Overeem bought that ticket on Nov. 15.

Plenty of media members reacted strongly to the conditional license describing the hearing as a farce. Overeem has long been subjected to rumors of steroid usage. A one-time light heavyweight, The 6-foot-5 Overeem has added incredible mass to his frame. He now weighs around 255 pounds.

Las Vegas is glad to hear that the fight is still on. The city's UFC cards in 2010 and 2011 have seemed cursed. Injuries have caused main events to go bye bye on several occasions.

UFC 108 was supposed to feature Anderson Silva-Vitor Belfort in the main event. UFC 109 was headlined by Randy Couture against Mark Coleman after several big fights fell through. UFC 130 lost Frank Edgar-Gray Maynard III due to injuries to both fighters. Most recently UFC 137 and UFC 143 lost Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz fights.

Official: Chrysler 300 gets even cushier with new Luxury Series

2012 Chrysler 300 Luxury Series

Despite major improvements, public perception still lingers that most American luxury sedans don't quite approach the level of refinement and equipment offered by their imported competitors. And so it follows that Chrysler models fall shy of Lincoln and Cadillac, especially because their pricing is less dear. But the latest announcement from Auburn Hills aims to close that perception - and pricing - gap ever so gently.

Whereas in the past, the Pentastar automaker may have tried to sell the buying public on terms like "Corinthian leather" to sell their luxury automobiles, today, all it has to do is call up its friends (read: corporate overlords) in Italy to get some top-quality Potrona Frau leather (usually found in Maserati and top-of-the-line Alfa Romeo models) and hand-sanded wood trim sent over. The new-for-2012 Chrysler 300 Luxury Series is visually distinguished as well by "platinum-chrome" trim on the grille, door mirrors and handles, plus 20-inch polished wheels and all the bells and whistles Chrysler can muster. Starting at $40,125, it's also a good bit less expensive than other luxury cars its size cars with similar trappings.

Couple that with what Chrysler claims is the first eight-speed automatic transmission offered on a domestic luxury sedan and available all-wheel drive, and the 300 Luxury Series could just make luxury import buyers swing by their local Chrysler dealership for a closer look. Short of that, have a look at the high-res images in the gallery and the press release after the jump for a closer look.

Engadget Primed: What is aperture, and how does it affect my photos?

Primed goes in-depth on the technobabble you hear on Engadget every day -- we dig deep into each topic's history and how it benefits our lives. You can follow the series here. Looking to suggest a piece of technology for us to break down? Drop us a line at primed *at* engadget *dawt* com.

Last week I wrote a piece for Engadget Primed on image sensors -- arguably the most critical component of any digital camera, having a direct influence on the quality of each and every photo. In a completely different way, another component that controls and changes the look of your photographs is the aperture.

To create amazing photos with impact takes much more than the will to capture them -- sadly we can't all be like Ashton Kutcher, snapping away at well-lit parties overrun with models. It's a multifaceted process; to have the desire to work for a shot, to make the effort to put yourself into position, and to know how to utilize the equipment you have in the best way possible. None of these skills are easy to master, yet just like a painter who knows how to use their brush, mastering the photographic tool that is your camera yields more opportunities to plaster that Google+ page with shots you're proud of.

In this Primed installment, we'll define the mechanism, explain the concepts and share ways to better convey messages in our two-dimensional stills -- just by adjusting the aperture. Ready to dive in? It's all after the break.

The Efficacy of Specialty QR Codes for a Variety of Tasks

We've all seen them - the square, two-dimensional, black and white barcodes that are plastered on posters, signs and products. Despite being invented in 1994, QR codes are only just beginning to sweep the nation in recent years, growing in ubiquity as they become more and more essential to marketers and business owners. While these QR codes are, by far, the simplest way to get a user to a website landing page, that isn't all they do. QR codes can have a wide variety of functionality, that is only limited by the minds that program them. Take a look at some of these unique ways in which QR codes are being used to fulfill a plethora of tasks.

Report: Mini dumps rally driver due to budget issues

Kris Meeke

We were pretty surprised to find out just a few days ago that Mini's new rally team had, for some reason, failed to sign up for next year's World Rally Championship. "Inexplicable" is what we called it at the time, but the latest reports coming out of the UK where the team is based could serve to cast some light on the situation.

Not only has the outfit - run by the rally gurus at Prodrive (who have, in the past, run Subaru's rally team, as well as Aston Martin and Ferrari works efforts at Le Mans) - missed the filing deadline, but they'll also reportedly let their best driver go. The reason? Funding, apparently. Although the team supposedly benefits from factory backing, a lack of sponsorship has reportedly left the team strapped for cash.

As a result, Northern Irish driver Kris Meeke - who was called up to the WRC team after claiming the 2009 title in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge - and his co-pilot have reportedly been released from their three-year contract after only one year. Meeke's seat will reportedly be auctioned off to the highest bidder - that is, whoever comes with sponsorship dollars, pounds or euros already lined up. Former Citroën WRC driver Dani Sordo, however, will reportedly carry on with the team, assuming it can secure its entry for the upcoming season.

How a factory-backed team like Mini's could find itself without enough funding has us scratching our heads, but our compatriots over at Autocar point to parent-company BMW's costly new entry into DTM next season as a potential answer.

Video: Savage Rivale gets out of our dreams and into a car

Savage Rivale

What the world needs now is love, sweet love. That's what The Carpenters would tell you, anyway - but we beg to differ. What the world needs now, in our opinion, is four-door convertibles. Because while many have experimented with the idea in recent years, and built them many decades ago, there just aren't any on the market these days.

That's where Savage Rivale comes in. Rather than take the parade-car approach, this Dutch project is more like a four-door supercar roadster. On acid. The initial Roadyacht GTS version packs the 7.0-liter V8 from the Corvette Z06 tuned to the tune of 600 horsepower and a four-seat cabin that's more similar in approach to that of a speedboats, but is accessed by some of the most imaginative doors we've ever seen and covered by a giant retractable hard-top.

It sounds strange, we know, but it makes a lot more sense once you see the video after the jump. What makes less sense is the plans to make a GTR version limited to track use that reportedly aims to take the Nürburgring lap record for four-doors, but after first reporting on the upstart nearly three years ago, we'll wait a little while longer to see how this plays out.

Online Booklet Printing: Laying The Foundation For Greater Success

Online booklet printing is an incredible, inexpensive and creative way to create a marketing tool that brings attention to your services or products in a vibrant and attention grabbing manner. For years businesses have had booklets printed up to define their history and describe their offerings and how they will benefit consumers. When it comes to garnering a loyal customer base, a print offering will allow individuals the opportunity to experience your growth with words. They will feel an attachment to the products and services that you offer and most importantly you will become ingrained in their minds. People tend to keep bound information and pamphlets as well, meaning they simply open a drawer and there you are, as opposed to searching the web or phonebook trying to recall your name. Who can Tito fight to close out his career? Griffin facing the end too says he?d take the fight

Even when Tito Ortiz went winless during five fights over four years between 2006-2010, he could still trumpet the fact that he wasn't taking major abuse. He can't do so after his last two losses where he took a ton of damage especially to the body against Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. That has Dana White torn on whether to let Ortiz have one final fight with the UFC.

If White feels he's not putting the 36-year-old in harm's way then the task becomes booking an opponent that can be sold as a legitimate fight.

Before UFC 140, Ortiz reiterated his desire for a third shot at Forrest Griffin. Griffin appeared on Sunday on the Las Vegas-based radio show "The MMA Fight Corner" to respond to Tito's challenge.

"If people will pay to see that fight then I'll get paid to fight that fight," Griffin said on FoxSportsRadio920. "But do people want to see it?"

Griffin, who's only 32 years old, surprised listeners by admitting that his career could be coming to an end shortly.

"For me, now I'm realizing that I don't have much left. This is the end of the road me. I want a couple more fight fights. Good ones. Fights where I don't get knocked out in the first round," laughed Griffin. "Fights where I like get hurt, bleed a little, but I kind of like rally. Something of that nature."

Griffin has been rocked and finished in three of his last five fights. He's also battled injuries. Those five fights took place over the course of 36 months.

Tito's lack of massive power and the fact that the two already hooked up for two pretty entertaining three-round fights sounds like the perfect match for Griffin, who continued to joke about his recent struggles against heavy hitters.

"I'm cool with wrestling now. I don't mind the wrestling so much. It's the getting hit hard that I don't seem to like anymore. I don't mind it but my nervous system seems to be really in disagreement with it these days," said Griffin.

Griffin was mainly non-chalant when asked about who else he'd like to fight. The most important thing for the former UFC light heavyweight champ is to fight in the U.S. Griffin cuts a ton of weight and doesn't like being out of his comfort zone in the States the week before the fight.

Listen to The MMA Fight corner on Wednesdays (8-9:30 p.m PT) and Sundays (9-10 p.m. PT) on FoxSportsRadio920.

UFC 140 wrap video: With ?horsepower meeting technique? Frank Mir treated ?Big Nog?s? arm like a ?bag of potato chips?

UFC 140 wrap video: With ?horsepower meeting technique? Frank Mir treated ?Big Nog?s? arm like a ?bag of potato chips?

Knockout punchers traditionally get the most love from fight enthusiasts. Rightly so. There's something scary watching an Anderson Silva fight knowing something devastating is going to happen any second.

Frank Mir certainly isn't in Silva's league with his striking, but it's tough to argue that he shouldn't be feared on a similar level. At UFC 140, for the second time in his career, he snapped a limb in the Octagon.

Mir described the finish of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira as horsepower meeting technique.

"When I grabbed it and started cranking it. It just crushed like a bag of potato chips," Mir told Sherdog in this video.

To watch Mir speak about snapping a limb in such calm fashion is scary stuff.

"That aspect of being able to devastatingly finish people, that's something to be fearful of," Mir said. "[...] Trust me, the guys who got knocked out tonight they're at the after party right now. People that are going to the hospital that are having rods put in their arm and get things casted up, not so much."

Mir also gained a lot of satisfaction out of submitting the guy who had the reputation as the best jiu-jitsu practitioner in the history of the sport at heavyweight, but the cherry on top was not wilting when he got blasted and nearly finished by "Big Nog's" fists.

"It showcased a few things people always draw into question. My ability to want to keep on pushing in a fight when it's going bad," Mir told Sherdog on this video.

Mir's description of the sequence of events that lead to the submission is a few minutes of must-watch video. So is the beginning when he talks about not being ready to fight at the start. It took Nogueira crushing him on the chin to go in auto-pilot mode.

"His warm up and mindset was much better than mine. When I got in there it was weird. I was looking around. I just did not feel activated. I didn't feel sharp," said Mir.

A warning to the rest of the heavyweight division, if you rock Mir, you better finish him because a 50-percent Mir in survival mode is about as scary as it gets in the big boy division.

Former UFC fighter Browning is big news in Thailand, finally turns himself in

Former UFC fighter Browning is big news in Thailand, finally turns himself in

Junie Brownie has been out of the UFC's hair for a while, but he's been back in the news over the last week. Apparently, it's a big deal in Thailand.

The former reality star on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" got into a big brouhaha at a bar in Phuket on Dec. 13. He fled the hospital where he was being treated for injuries, been missing ever since and the Thai papers are all over the story.

Police have mounted a Phuket-wide hunt for an American man who started one brawl in a Phuket bar then continued it in the emergency treatment ward at Patong Hospital. Police have named the suspect they wish to interview as Allen Browning, 26, a Thai boxer who fled into the night on Sunday in Patong and has not been seen since.

Earlier in the night, Mr Browning allegedly was seen beating up on an expat woman in a bar in Patak Road, Karon. He also lashed out at Thai female bar staff when they tried to intervene, police said.

Four other tourists from Australia and the US also attempted to intervene but Mr Browning lashed out at them, too, police said.

UPDATE: Browning finally showed up at the police station and turned himself in according to Phuketwan.com.

Former UFC fighter Browning is big news in Thailand, finally turns himself inOne of those tourist was Simon Menzies. Browning claims it was Menzies, who was the real troublemaker. Fightlinker discovered that Menzies was also in trouble with the law earlier this year during a flight from Sydney to Darwin.

Sydney man Simon Wilson Menzies, 31, was drunk and angry when he told the female cabin crew manager on a flight this week that he could "bring the plane down if he wanted."

Menzies said: "I'm half muslim, half Aboriginal and everyone else is a white [expletive]. I could [expletive] blow up the plane."

[...] The court heard Menzies was on Jetstar flight JQ81 from Brisbane to Darwin on Tuesday com when he became abusive after being refused a fourth beer.

The court heard he was refused service because he continued to be rowdy despite repeated warnings.

After he was refused service Menzies, who is 190cm and solidly built, stood over the cabin crew manager and told her to get the captain.

"Send the captain I will [expletive] smash him I'm the biggest guy on the plane," he said.

None of this comes as much of a shock with Browning. He was nearly kicked off TUF 8 several times for violent outbursts. He survived and was even given two more fights with the promotion.

In 2009, Browning was taken to a Las Vegas area hospital after what was reported to be a failed suicide attempt. He compounded his issue by allegedly attacking a female nurse at the hospital. The UFC immediately released him from his contract. He's gone 1-4 since his stint with the promotion and last fought in August. Frankly, right now fighting is the least of his problems.
