The best sushi restaurants in Tokyo
by Kelly Wetherille
Ask five Tokyoites to name the best sushi restaurants in the city, and you?re likely to get five different answers -- the old "how long is a piece of string?" quandary.
That's because the sushi experience is a very personal one that can include not only raw seafood, but also things like unmatched service, chefs whose skills were honed by years of apprenticeship, an atmosphere that screams ?traditional Japan? and, in many cases, a whopping bill.
Because of all this, any one traveler?s favorite sushi experience is going to largely depend on budget, interests and previous experience with the cuisine.
But the great thing about Tokyo is its sheer breadth and depth of choice when it comes to eating out.
Sushi is no exception, and at least one of these five restaurants or chains is sure to please just about any hungry visitor.

Dave Perry: Food critics need to look beyond central Tokyo
In 2008 Michelin awarded a total of 191 of its coveted stars to Tokyo restaurants, confirming the status of Japan?s capital as a dining nirvana.
The city has consistently displaced the once mighty Paris as the culinary capital of the world ever since, racking up 331 stars in the recently released 2012 guide.
Critics, writers and bloggers have all played their part in maintaining the litany of praise.
English-language commentators should also broaden their horizons.
After all, Tokyo is really a collection of villages sharing a concrete veneer that, thankfully, has failed to completely obliterate the individual charms of myriad neighborhoods and the multitude of dining experiences they provide.

Soldiers, rebels killed in battle for Damascus suburbs
If Round 1 is the war of words, Phil Davis leads 10-8 over Rashad Evans
CHICAGO -- In most interviews Phil Davis comes off as a reserved young man. He's not out to ruffle any feathers, but those of us who've had a chance to speak to him repeatedly always knew there was a potential media darling behind that conservative facade.
In the lead-up to Saturday's UFC on Fox 2 card, Rashad Evans has brought out the beast in Davis and the former UFC light heavyweight hasn't reacted too well.
It started last week when Evans flipped out on Davis calling him a "boy." Yesterday during the UFC on Fox 2 prefight press conference, Evans shook his head, appeared annoyed and even looked flustered on several occasions.
[Related: UFC on Fox 2 carries huge implications for blockbuster fights]
As the banter began, Evans tried to play it cool.
"For the most part, I've got nothing against Phil, but you we've got a fight so I've got a lot against him right now. It's personal, but not really PERSONAL personal," said Evans, who had heated prefight words with previous opponents like Tito Ortiz and Quinton Jackson.
Evans got irked when the issue of college wrestling came up. Phil Davis, a more accomplished NCAA star at Penn State than Evans was at Michigan State, laughed when someone asked if his opponent could beat him in a straight wrestling match. Evans kept saying "your technique is trash."
Then Davis was asked about missing the opportunity to face Evans back in August in Philadelphia. Davis quickly pointed out that he didn't get to fight in front of his friends and family from nearby Harrisburg, Pa. Evans took issue with the fact that Davis didn't say he was sad to lose out on the opportunity to fight him. Davis fired back, "Nobody heard me say that!"
Evans snapped again when Davis explained his understanding of what the result of a win could be, a possible title shot against Jon Jones.
"The winner of this fight will fight for the title, but in the event that I hit him too hard and break my hand ... it might lead to somebody else getting the title shot first," said Davis.
"You don't punch nobody hard. Phil can't hit. Phil punches with his hands open and everything," Evans said. "He couldn't bust a grape. You look like Arsenio Hall."
Davis laughed.
"Give him a hand y'all. Give him a hand," said Davis.
That opened the door for a female fan to ask Davis whether he looked more like Hall or NBA star Dwight Howard? Davis handled it gracefully as he done throughout the lead-up to Saturday's tilt. We'll see if his poise remains intact in the fight. Either way, this week showed he'll be a valuable asset on main cards for years to come in the UFC.

Official: Ford reports biggest profits since '98, still fails to meet estimates
Filed under: Europe, Ford, Earnings/Financials
Ford has announced the company's single largest profit since 1998, thanks in part to a one-time tax gain. The company drew in a net income of $13.6 billion last quarter and the news marked the automaker's 11th consecutive profitable quarter. For perspective, Ford made $190 million in 2010. The company's net income was bolstered by the fact that Ford eliminated a valuation allowance against deferred tax benefits. The company created the valuation allowance in 2006 when it began reporting operating losses. Analysts reportedly see the elimination as a sign that the manufacturer expects to be profitable in coming years.
The company made $8.8 billion in profit in 2011, or $1.51 a share. That's an increase of $463 million over 2010. Even so, the company's net income missed analysts' estimates thanks in part to higher commodity costs, currency fluctuations and flooding in Thailand. The automaker spent $100 million more in commodities like steel than it projected. Those facts, combined with a deteriorating European market, helped Ford miss analyst estimates by 5 cents per share.

Lucky New Year: 4 near misses for Aussie travelers

Report: Car and Driver Lightning Lap is back, throws two trucks into the mix [w/video]
Car and Driver is back with its annual Lightning Lap roundup for a sixth year, with 20 of the world's best vehicles taking to Virginia International Raceway to lay down the quickest time around VIR's 4.1-mile Grand West Course.
Included in this year's running is a suitably diverse spread of sports cars and sedans, ranging from the lowly Volkswagen Jetta GLI to the formidable Porsche Panamera Turbo S - a difference of 350 horsepower and over $168,000. And, just to add a bit more spice to the festivities, C/D introduced a new class (LLT) to include two trucks in the running: the BMW X5 M and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.
But what C/D gives, it taketh away. Gone is the LL5 class ($250,000 and up) and so are the LLU cars, like the Mosler MT900S, the current Lightning Lap champion. And we're perfectly okay with that. After all, we're more interested in how the Lotus Evora S hangs with the Porsche Cayman R and where the BMW 1 Series M Coupe stacks up against the Ford Mustang Boss 302 Laguna Seca - and not just for convoluted naming conventions. Check out a video after the break for a taste and then head over to C/D for the full story.

Filed under: Government/Legal, Chrysler, GM, Earnings/Financials
2008 was one crazy, almost surreal year. It was the year when the economy took a nosedive, and the U.S. auto industry nearly ceased to exist. One of the last major decisions former President Bush made before he left office was to give Chrysler and General Motors a combined $17.4 billion to keep their doors open.
That money held over the two automakers for a few months, but The Detroit News reports that the Bush administration almost took a different tack. The New Yorker published a 57-page economic memo that was written by economist Larry Summers to President Elect Obama. The memo claims that President Bush was noodling an earlier bankruptcy for the automakers, backed by up to $100 billion in government financing.
By instead forwarding GM and Chrysler a bridge loan, Bush (pictured here with former Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli) effectively prolonged the inevitable and pushed the tough decision on to the next administration. But that could have been the best possible action to take - Summers was reportedly of the opinion that pushing the automakers through bankruptcy too early could have severely damaged the entire U.S. auto industry - not just at Chrysler and GM.
In the end, Chrysler entered bankruptcy in April, followed by GM in June. Chrysler no longer owes the federal government any money, though Uncle Sam still owns 26.5 percent of The General. As a result of the Bush administration's choices, the Obama administration is the one that gets the blame and credit (depending on your political viewpoint) for shepherding the two automakers through bankruptcy.

Gonzaga easily over Oliveira, Stout falls short versus Tavares at UFC 142
Back in 2010, Gabriel Gonzaga lost his confidence and his passion. He got both back tonight in Rio de Janeiro.
The former heavyweight title contender schooled hotshot prospect Edinaldo Oliveira in less than four minutes. Gonzaga made it look easy as he took the 6-foot-7 Oliveira to the ground and eventually locked on a nasty rear-naked choke to force the tap at 3:22 of the first round.
"It felt great to be back in the Octagon. My time away from the UFC was good for me. I dealt with some personal business in my life and came back refocused. Before, I was training well, but my mind just wasn't in it. Now, I'm back, I feel great. I'm focused and I showed that," said Gonzaga.
[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]
Gonzaga (13-6, 8-5 UFC) last fought with the promotion in Oct. of 2010, then abruptly retired. He had a comeback fight with a smaller promotion in October of 2011.
After starting off 4-0 with the promotion, he rose near the top of the division, but then lost badly to UFC heavyweight champ Randy Couture at UFC 74. After that fight, Gonzaga looked tentative and wilted in big moments going just 3-4.
Oliveira (13-2, 0-1 UFC) was way in over his head tonight. He looked to small for the weight class and his takedown defense was shaky. Once Gonzaga got him to the ground, Oliveira was easy prey.
Stout tentative in first fight since trainer's passing
This was going to be a tough night for Sam Stout. He was facing Brazilian Thiago Tavares on his home turf and doing so without his trainer Shawn Tompkins, who passed away last August.
Having to defend takedowns early, Stout got taken out of his game and lost via unanimous decision.
Stout (17-7-1, 6-6 UFC) was taken down twice in the first round. Tavares did little damage and really never settled Stout on his back, but the mental toll it took on the Canadian changed the fight.
Stout, a very dangerous striker, never committed the rest of the way to letting his hands go. At times, he was actually outstruck by the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
"Sam Stout was the toughest opponent I've ever faced and this is the biggest win of my career. I thought about this fight for a long time. I have to be honest: of all the ways I saw this fight going, I never expected to beat him striking," Tavares said. "I tried to take the fight to the ground, but he has great takedown defense. The fight stayed on the feet and I was able to win there. I want another big name next."
This was Stout's first fight without Tompkins in his camp and cageside. Tompkins was more than just a trainer, he was Stout's brother-in-law. Stout's sister Emilie was married to the trainer.
"This was my first fight without Shawn (Tompkins). It was definitely an adjustment not having him in my corner. I hope Shawn would be proud," Stout said. "I thought I took rounds two and three, but I just struggled to find my rhythm. My head wasn't in it in the first round. I had a slow start and I have no one to blame but myself for that."
The lackluster performance wasn't surprising, but it was uncharacteristic. Stout is only .500 fighter with the promotion, but he's earned four postfight award bonuses.

Chad Mendes finding plenty of love from Brazilian fans before UFC 142
When the UFC hit Brazil in August for UFC 134, the crowd was raucous, to say the least. They were so excited to see their fighters, they cheered, chanted, and threw beer through the duration of the card. This time around, that environment might be intimidating for an American fighter facing one of a beloved Brazilian fighter.
Chad Mendes has not faced any hostility since arriving in Rio de Janeiro earlier this week to fight Jose Aldo Jr. In fact, he's found a warm reception.
"I was surprised by how supportive the fans were. I didn't expect to receive the cheers and I appreciated it," Mendes said at today's press conference in Rio.
"I think the fans realize how important this fight is for the featherweight division, for the UFC and for the sport. I'm ready to go and I know Jose is. I can't wait to do this."
Their fight for the UFC's featherweight belt is a match-up between two young guns who are known for very different skills. Champion Aldo has snapping kicks and speed in his striking. Mendes was a NCAA Division I finalist in wrestling and uses those skills in his fights.
[Don't miss the action: Watch UFC 142 live on Y! Sports]
Mendes says that he has prepared for Aldo's advantages.
"We've worked on that in camp, particularly in getting ready for his striking. Without giving away too much strategy, I am really confident in my ability to take this fight where I want it. This is the moment I've been waiting for since I was a kid. A few years ago, I'd never fought outside of California. Saturday, I'm walking into the Octagon in Rio and I'm planning on leaving with the UFC featherweight title."
So who will walk away with the UFC featherweight belt? Will Aldo defend the belt for the fifth straight time, or will Mendes keep his record unblemished? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.
